Lauren St John grew up surrounded by animals on a farm and game reserve in Zimbabwe, Africa. Her family had a pet giraffe called Jenny, as well as eight horses, six cats, eight dogs, two orphaned warthogs and a rescued goat. Her passion for conservation started then. At 16, she won the National Under-18s painting prize with a picture of an owl. She has been on a mission ever since to convey the magnificent proud spirit that lives inside wild animals free of man's influence or control, through photography, painting & her novels.
Now living in London, England, Lauren is an ambassador for the Born Free Foundation, helping them rescue leopards, dolphins and other animals from horrific situations of captivity. She is also an award-winning children's author. Her White Giraffe and One Dollar Horse series are international bestsellers, and both The White Giraffe and The Glory are being made into movies. Her adult books include Rainbow's End, an African memoir, and Hardcore Troubadour: The Life and Near Death of Steve Earle.
Lauren St John is proud to be a Patron of the Born Free Foundation, an international wildlife charity dedicated to compassionate conservation, protecting threatened species and wild animal welfare.
This year is the 50th anniversary of the acclaimed movie, Born Free, which starred Virginia McKenna OBE and Bill Travers MBE. Their experiences with lions and other wildlife in Africa had a profound effect on them and was the catalyst that led to them founding the Born Free Foundation.
To commemorate the film's anniversary, Born Free have declared 2016 'The Year of the Lion.' 50% of the proceeds of Lauren's exquisite photographs is to be donated to the charity to help them with their ongoing lion conservation projects.
