I met this lion cub at Roxy Dankwert's Wild is Life sanctuary in Zimbabwe. He was only a few months old but I was startled by the wildness in his eyes. He had a killer glare. I climbed up on a large boulder, thinking I'd be safe there but he evaded his minder, bounded up and chewed my cowboy boot -- while my foot was still in it! His carer distracted him and he moved off. Moments later, I was chatting to my sister when he came up behind me and bit me on the arm. It was only a playful bite, but that's purely because he didn't have the strength to do worse. Again, his eyes blazed with an extraordinary fire. It's the thing I love most about wild animals. I took this photo as I was leaving. He had this King-of-the-Castle look about him. It made me happy. Whatever the future holds for him in a world where over 10,000 wild lions have been killed by hunters since 2003, I hope he retains it.
