Most people associate cheetahs with speed. They're the fastest animals on earth and can accelerate to 120kmph. In fact, they only do that for seconds at a time. Mostly, when you see cheetahs, they're still. They'll spend hours sitting or lying in wait for prey, tense but almost motionless. Unlike leopards, they're oddly gentle souls. My dad once woke to find one sitting on his chest (a tame one) and lived to tell the tale. I photographed this one as she dozed at a game reserve in South Africa. The sun was shining and she looked liked a cat basking in the sun.
Sadly, cheetahs are in crisis. Their populations are shrinking so rapidly thanks to conflict with humans, war, loss of habitat and prey and the illegal pet trade. They are prolific breeders in the wild but not in captivity. Few cheetah cubs survive till adulthood with the mortality rate being 90 per cent in the Serengeti. In many areas of Africa, the gene pool is compromised or non-existent. They're on the Vulnerablexx species list. If we don't act fast to save them, extinction looms.
