Pink and White over Red (1957) Mark Rothko Inspiration piece for Adam Weston for the Under the Influence show, Fall 2016 |
"As a young child (a baby actually) I was taken to visit The Museum of Modern Art, The Guggenheim, The Whitney, etc. I returned to these wonderful museums many times during my formative years.
Inspired by the great work of many of the modern abstract masters, the artist that had the strongest influence on me was Mark Rothko.
I was drawn into the color and atmospheric light (and darkness) of his large canvases in a deep and meditative way. His work made me feel as if I were floating in a semi-conscious, weightless state of being.
There was a paradox in veiwing something otherworldly and alien - and yet at the same time, something fully grounded on earth - with a very human sense and perception of light in the material world.
The spiritual and ethereal nature of his work has deeply influenced my paintings. Although the compositions of the two paintings are quite different, I feel a relationship exists between the color and quality of light."
