The Lookout

"I photographed these rhinos at a South African game reserve,
which I can't identify in case it becomes a target for poachers.
When we first stopped, they were bristling and agitated, kicking up
dust to warn. They looked the way people always imagine them,
aggressive and myopic. Gradually, they realized we were not a
threat. One remained on its feet, looking out for its mate, while the
other lay down. Her eyelids drooped. To my amazement, she fell
asleep. I could not get over how vulnerable she seemed. For all her
immense bulk, she seemed almost nakedly innocent and exposed.
It was a powerful reminder of how poachers see rhinos.
In 2014, over 1,200 rhinos were killed in South Africa -- one every
eight hours. I believe that it is the sacred duty of everyone who
cares about our planet to save Africa's unicorn from man's greed
and stupidity."
