Head Full of Dreams

When I was 11, my family moved to a 1,000 farm called Rainbow's End in Zimbabwe. There were a lot of wonderful things about Rainbow's End, not least that it had a 100-acre private game reserve, but best of all was our pet giraffe, Jenny. I grew up in a war, but my parents gave my sister and I an immense amount of freedom. I spent a lot of my childhood hanging out in the game reserve, painting and drawing, often watched by Jenny.
Jenny inspired my first children's book, The White Giraffe, which became a series and will hopefully soon be a movie. She gave me a lifelong love of giraffes. Because they're such peaceable animals and images of them are so ubiquitous in culture, few people realize that they're in crisis. Across Africa, they're hunted for bush meat, especially in war zones like the Congo. Giraffe populations have dropped by an estimated 65 per cent since 1998 to just 80,000, a horrifying decline in under a decade.
I photographed this particular giraffe in South Africa. I liked the idea of getting a ‘head in the clouds' shot, something I managed with a different giraffe. This giraffe was munching the top of a tree. As it turned to look for its friends, it seemed for a moment to be bathed in a sort of celestial glow. Entirely appropriate, I felt.
