Brave New World

When I photographed this elephant calf, he was only hours old and yet he'd already walked twelve miles. The power of his bond with his mother was striking to see. They were completely in tune with one another, besotted with one another. She sheltered him as she browsed. Elephant mums are very tactile with their babies, always caressing them, reassuring them or helping them over or under obstacles. To me, this is a portrait of love. I also like the textures in the photo -- how the female elephant's hide is like the bark of an ancient tree. It makes her and her calf seem an integral part the landscape. For the most part, us humans choose to separate ourselves from our environment or wage war on it. Elephants are symbiotically linked to the thorns, trees and earth.
