Study of Trees
Paul Cezanne
Inspiration piece for Victoria Palermo in the
Under the Influence show
Fall 2016

I am interested in the play of light on surfaces both nature-made and human-made. As an art student I was particularly taken by Cezanne's depiction of trees in the landscape. In Cezanne's world, patches of color appeared next to tree trunks, coming forward and flattening the depth between the trees and what lay beyond.

My wall series -- Tsugas -- relates to the view outside my summer studio where water, seen beyond a stand of hemlock trees, reflects a myriad of colors from the surrounding landscape. The combinations of color shift constantly throughout the day.
