Little Sister (1962)
Agnes Martin
Inspiration piece for Megan Klim for the
Under the Influence show, Fall 2016

"The main thing in making art often is letting go of your expectation and your idea."

This quote by Agnes Martin sparked my series Secret Code and allowed me to focus on the process of art making. This piece was the first of this series.

As in Martin's work, repetition and order are present as I methodically punctured the paper line by line. Just as the nails pierced the canvas repeatedly in Martin's Little Sister, I pierced the paper with an awl. It was a contemplative and ritualistic process which resulted in work that took on a life of its own by creating a quiet texture. A friend suggested to me recently that my work was "Agnes Martin meets Eva Hesse," which made me take a closer look at Martin's work and more importantly, her thinking. I was drawn to the brave simplicity of her paintings and drawings where the purity of line or shape spoke volumes.

It was my hope that in the making of these, they would reveal their message without a direct explanation or direct association. As Agnes Martin has said regarding her work that they are "an essay in discretion, inwardness, silence," I too sought a response that required a quiet focus as I listened to the sound of the awl repeatedly puncturing the paper.
