The Source of the Loue (1864) Gustave Courbet Inspiration piece for Deborah Freedman in the Under the Influence show, Fall 2016 |
"The Source of the Loue is so beautifully painted, with a heavily loaded brush and palette knife - the colors forcing the interplay of mineral and aquatic textures to the surface. Courbet's view of the grotto emphasizes the outpouring of water from the rocks -a spectacle of the sublime. The painting is considered an example of the feminization of Courbet's oeuvre -- the landscape as allegory. "A waterfall smashed by a thousand accidents".
When I discovered Buttermilk Falls in the Catskill Mountains I thought of making my homage to Courbet -- a painter whose work I have studied and long admired."
