The Mona Lisa (1504)
Leonardo da Vinci
Inspiration piece for Lisa Ferber for the
Under the Influence show, Fall 2016

"I wanted to create something special for this show, and I thought about various classic works of art. I decided it would be fun to work from The Mona Lisa, because frankly I never felt a kinship with it and I wanted to play with it and explore it and discover how to do it in my own way.

I'm not an earth-tones girl, so while I did the underpainting in a similar palette to da Vinci's, my soul burst out and I had to add bright colors, as well as a triple-tier necklace and opera gloves.

As I studied photos of the original, I embraced what a master of contour and of light and shadow da Vinci was. My Mona Lisa also seems to be throwing more shade than the original, even though she's really just giving herself important reminders.

My challenge here was to keep the simplicity of the features and maintain the intrigue of her expression. And then at the end I thought, well, obviously she's thinking she needs more salt on her canapes and that she should workout more.

It was an honor to have my own moment considering The Mona Lisa."
