Romeo & Juliet (Embrace) Viktoriya Basina oil on canvas, 39" x 31"; $5,000 Exhibited at Village West in Wherefore Art Spring 2019 |
And yet I wish but for the thing I have;
My bounty is as boundless as the sea,
My love as deep; the more I give to thee,
The more I have, for both are infinite.
-- Romeo and Juliet, Act II, Scene 2
This painting is about an embrace of love as deep and boundless as the sea. The architectural elements in the background remind of secret meeting places where lovers can meet away from curious eyes.
The fish - ancient symbol of desire and early christian symbol used for marking secret meeting places and graves hint at the tragic outcome. The gymnast figures in the background symbolize all the impossible tricks that the lovers undertake in order to be with one another.
