Teresa Barkley

Shakespeare Stamp

from Wherefore Art

Teresa Barkley participated in Wherefore Art in Spring 2019 at Village West.

Teresa Barkley began her life-long passion for working with fabric at the age of five when her mother taught her to sew. Barkley began patchwork projects immediately, attempting to duplicate antique family quilts. However, she realized early that duplicating traditional quilt designs was not as satisfying as creating one-of-a-kind, original works. Many of Barkley's quilts are designed to resemble postage stamps, and most include recycled materials.

Barkley received a formal education in textiles, and she has worked for many years as a patternmaker for NYC designers. She lives in Maplewood, NJ, where she divides her time between family, the garment industry, and making art quilts. Barkley's quilts have traveled to museum venues throughout the United States. They have also been featured in exhibits in Africa, Australia, Europe, and Japan. Her work can be found in the collections of the Smithsonian American Art Museum, the International Quilt Study Center and Museum, the Newark Museum and many private collections.
